FlexJobs is a site that lists verified job openings for over 50 career categories. Opportunities range from 100% remote jobs to working part-time at a local business. All job postings offer some amount of remote or schedule flexibility.

Another aspect I like about this platform is each posting is career-oriented and can earn consistent income over the long term. While side hustles help earn temporary income, you won’t find one-time gigs here. However, you will need to work harder at finding work.

While FlexJobs can’t guarantee you will receive a job offer from their hard work, they make the job search process easier.

How Does FlexJobs Work?

If you use sites like Indeed or Monster to look for new jobs, FlexJobs is very similar. There are currently more than 68,000 available jobs from 5,500 companies.

Most of these jobs are remote but may require some commuting and travel. The majority have you work for an employer although there are many freelance jobs too. One common trait is that they have more flexible schedules than a traditional job.

First, you search for a job that interests you. Then you apply for the position through the employer’s website.

One difference between FlexJobs and other online job boards is that FlexJobs verifies each listing. You may see some jobs on other job boards that seem too good to be true.

But if it’s on FlexJobs, you know the company is hiring.

Another difference is that you pay a flat fee to use FlexJobs. It ranges from $23.95 each month to $71.40 for an annual plan.

This fee is reasonable, but it can still be frustrating when there are many free job boards with similar postings. But the free boards are less likely to verify that the posting isn’t a scam.

You may also try the $2.95 14-day trial period to compare these postings to resources you currently use to find work.

I subscribe to a few free and premium job boards and see overlapping posts. One reason I like this platform is for its wide variety of job categories and the career coaching perks that can be beneficial.

Or you might apply for the wrong position. The advanced search tools on FlexJobs can be beneficial when you don’t have much free time to job hunt.

Once you find a job you like, make sure you read the entire description. The listing should include the work schedule, travel requirements and salary.

I also find it easy to find relevant jobs as soon as you join as the platform has you list up to five desired positions. A “new jobs of interest” box appears in your dashboard with personalized recommendations.

I like that FlexJobs works with well-known companies and small agencies to have more opportunities to apply. The platform also hands out awards for highly-rated employers which also makes it easier to find the best companies to work for and compare recession-proof jobs.

Is Experienced Required?

Another deciding factor is if you qualify for enough job openings to justify the subscription cost.

I find the relative lack of entry-level openings to be frustrating. For example, this platform was limited when I was switching careers as my previous work experience wasn’t a good fit for the new jobs I was seeking. It’s a different story now that I have several years of relevant experience.

One downside is that FlexJobs costs money to join. On the bright side, FlexJobs doesn’t display ads. The fee makes it possible for the platform to screen each job listing.

There are two different membership plans:

  • Annual: $71.40 billed once a year

FlexJobs is relatively affordable in comparison to other premium job boards. To clarify, it’s not uncommon for some boards to charge $40 a month. And that can be a lot of money to spend if you struggle to make ends meet.

You can pair your resumes with custom job searches. When new jobs post, you receive email alerts. On the FlexJobs dashboard, you can quickly search results by selecting your custom resume profiles.

In most cases, you will apply for jobs directly from the employer website. Storing your resumes online expedites the application process.

Further, companies may reach out to you via FlexJobs if you have unique skills. However, this situation is rare.

Skills Tests

You can take more than 150 skills tests for free. According to FlexJobs, each test can cost $14.99 on other platforms. These tests help you learn your strengths and weaknesses. The tests can also increase your odds of receiving a job interview.

Employers can also search member profiles, and high test scores can increase your chances of being spotted. However, a professional accreditation such as a degree or PMP certification to verify high-income skills typically carries more weight for employers.

It’s natural to feel skeptical of any online company that charges you to use their service. However, people have been finding real jobs through FlexJobs since 2007. Keep in mind that applying through FlexJobs doesn’t guarantee getting a job offer and it can be a competitive job market.

There are also many freelance and international jobs, but no gig economy jobs. More than a few years ago when I first started using this platform. To be clear, a fair number of listings are location-restricted to certain cities and states.
